Staff Selection Commission conducts entrance exam for the recruitment to the post of Junior Engineers. The exam is called SSC JE and is one of the most competitive exams for technical graduates. Every year lakhs of students appear for this exam to get an opportunity to work for one of the prestigious departments of Indian Government as Junior Engineers.
The SSC JE Paper-1 is around the corner and students all around the country are asking the question “how do I prepare for general studies part in the SSC JE”. To find an answer to the question, let’s first have a look at the exam pattern for Paper-1 of SSC JE.
SSC JE Paper-1 Exam Pattern:
The Paper-1 of SSC JE has multiple choice questions which are for total 200 marks. The first round of SSC JE is a computer based test and the total duration is 2 hours.
Following is the breakup of marks for the first paper:
General Intelligence and Reasoning—50
General Awareness—50
- Part A- General Engineering (Civil and Structural) or
• Part B- General Engineering (Electrical) or
• Part C- General Engineering (Mechanical)

Each question is of 1 mark and there will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.
SSC JE General Studies/ General Awareness Section
For SSC JE Examination, the General Awareness Section is very important given the fact that it is very scoring. For a candidate who has covered this part nicely, it will take less than 2 seconds for him/her to answer each question from this section.
In SSC JE exam, the question in the General Awareness section are more focused towards the static knowledge rather than the current affairs as in the case of banking exams.
50 questions of 1 mark each will be asked from the following sections:
- Indian History
- Indian Polity
- Geography
- Indian Economy
- Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology)
- Miscellaneous
Let’s have a brief look at the importance of each of these parts as far as SSC JE is concerned.
History: Questions from Indian History have more weight age than World History. Medieval and Modern History have more weight age.
Polity: NCERT books from class 8th to 10th should cover all the basics required for this part.
Geography: A lot of questions are asked from this part and NCERT books of class 11th ad 12th will suffice for basic information.
Economics: Fundamental knowledge (definitions and formula) are asked from Macroeconomics and Microeconomics.
Miscellaneous: This category covers all other topics like books and authors, current affairs, computer science, science and technology etc.
Tips to Prepare for General Awareness for SSC JE
- Consistently read at least one newspaper daily. This will help in improving both GK and English.
- Solving the Previous Year’s Question Paper of SSC JE will help to know the type of questions asked and the difficulty level.
- Follow a blog or YouTube channel for Daily Updates on GK and Current affairs.
- Try to keep the fundamentals strong. Be good with facts and definitions.
- Revise and practice as this will help in recalling facts on the day of the examination.
